It is one of the biggest squares in Eurpe. Each of its sides is around 200m long and its total surface is 40 000 square meters. The curiosity is thata it was already marked out durning the foundation of the city in 1257. The level of of this square is not identical everywhere: it is the highhest in the neighbourhood of St Mary's Church and two lowest at the corner of St Ana's and Wislna Streets, at the other end of diagonal. The difference between the levels is around 2 meters. From each side of the Market Square, except for the eastern one, take tree streets, among wchich every second was leading to a town gate in the medieval defensive awlls. The ancient Market Square was divided into small markets where salt, coal, lead, but also poultry, fishes and bread were sold.

The part of Market Square, just in front of Bracka Street used to be called "at the homage", because at this exact place, after coronations, kings used to sit down on a special wooden platworm where they were receiving the homage from the inhabitants of the city. It's worth mentioning that at the same place in 1525 the homage by the Teutonic master Albrecht Hohenzollern was paid to the polish king Sigmund the Old.

Not far away from the townhall tower, there is a plaque surrounded by four poles, commemorating Tadeusz Kosciuszko sewaring an oath there in 1794.
